The objectives of the Sicilian Biodiversity Observatory are the conservation and the monitoring of the protected and endangered species on the Island and its seas. The Sicilian center of The National Institute for Environmental Research and Protection, and the CNR Institute on Coastal Marine Environment, care for seagoing aspect of the Observatory. The biodiversity of the Sicilian marine waters represent an immense naturalist, cultural, scientific and economic patrimony for Sicily and plays a relevant role in the ecology of the entire Mediterranean basin.
